I'm working on my first guitar-building project and recently purchased the Fox Universal Side Bending Machine. I built the template-jig (photo attached) today but had a question before I try this out. Two of the steel rods aren't perfectly flush with the side leaves. In both cases, the circumference of the rods project about 1.5 millimeters beyond the top-edge of the side leaves. Is this something I need to fix before going live? In other words, will this tiny projection end up causing a crease (or bump) in the rosewood when I bend it to make the sides? Or will a projection that small not really make a difference once I clamp the sides into the mold after bending. I'm hoping that once I bend the sides and then clamp them into the mold, such tiny imperfections will be evened out. But I figured I should check first before I risk ruining a nice piece of rosewood. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Are you saying that the diameter of the steel rod is not tangent to the contour of you template?

James -- thanks. And yes. That is correct. It is not perfectly tangent. Hopefully my pic below makes it more clear.

I would file the holes down a bit to get the rods flush. Otherwise you could have a slight skew/twist on your finished bend.

If you are using a building mold or form you are fine and you won't need to do anything as the mold is what will determine the shape anyway .

I'd grind it level, but as John says it won't really effect your side much (they move quite a bit no matter how well they're bent). If you ever try to make laminated sides, though, you'd best be sure your form is spot on.
